One night. The football clubs of southern Sydney.

We are looking for a room for the first Soccer Trivia night. We think it should be yours — and we would rather do it with you than simply hire from you.

The proposal, in short

Soccer Trivia is a football-only trivia competition for clubs. Six people represent their club at a table and play a live night against teams from other clubs. Entry is free for the clubs; the night is paid for by partners.

We are inviting 123 clubs across five neighbouring associations. We need one room for one evening, and we would like it to be Ramsgate RSL — named as the venue partner rather than billed as a hire.

What we are asking for

  • A function room for one evening, roughly 6:00pm to 10:00pm
  • A screen or projector, a microphone and sound
  • A date we can announce
  • Permission to name Ramsgate RSL publicly once we agree

What we are not asking for

  • Money. We are not asking you to sponsor or fund anything
  • Exclusivity beyond this first event
  • Staff beyond your normal bar and floor
  • Any commitment before we can give you a confirmed number

The part most proposals leave out

No club has confirmed yet. We are counting interest first, precisely so that nobody — including you — commits a room to a number that turns out to be wrong. We will not ask you to hold a date until we can tell you how many tables are coming.

Why a partnership rather than a hire

A hire is a transaction that ends when the lights go off. What we are proposing is that Ramsgate RSL is named as the venue partner of the first event — in the invitation that reaches 123 club committees, on both websites, and in the video coverage of the night. The room is what you contribute. The audience, the format and the production are what we bring.

Who would be in your room

Not a general trivia crowd. Football club people, arriving in club groups, on a night they would otherwise be at home.

FIVE NEIGHBOURING ASSOCIATIONS St George Canterbury Eastern Suburbs Sutherland Shire Bankstown 22 32 24 26 19 clubs clubs clubs clubs clubs 123 clubs invited none has confirmed yet — the invitations are going out now EACH CLUB THAT ENTERS SENDS ONE TABLE Six people, one table, one club Committee, players, life members, juniors’ parents, the club’s own sponsors Club counts are the real number of member clubs in each association, taken from their own listings. Nothing above is a forecast of attendance — the arithmetic for that is on a later page.

Who a club sends

A table is six, and clubs fill it from their own community rather than with ringers:

  • Committee members and volunteers
  • Senior players and coaches
  • Life members
  • Parents from the junior teams
  • The club’s own local sponsors

Why that matters to a licensed club

These are adults who arrive together, stay for about three hours, and are not in a hurry. They are the demographic a football club already knows how to feed and serve, and most of them live within a few suburbs of Ramsgate.

Clubs that want to bring more than six people enter more than one table.

Every club we are writing to

These are the real member clubs of the five associations, taken from their own listings. This is the invitation list, not a list of entrants — none has confirmed yet.

About the crests. Each one is shown as the association itself publishes it, from the association’s own server. They are the property of the clubs and associations concerned, are reproduced here for identification only, and appear on this private page rather than on any public one. Football St George and Bankstown District publish no association logo we can point at, and the clubs showing initials have no crest published by their association.

How the night runs

About three hours from first question to last. Your staff are not asked to run any of it — we bring the host, the questions, the scoring and the scoreboard.

6:00 Doors, check-in clubs arrive, eat, order 6:45 Rounds 1–3 easiest first, warming up BREAK 7:40 15 min · bar 7:55 Rounds 4–6 scores read out BREAK 8:45 15 min · bar 9:00 Final round, tie-breaker, prizes · finished by 9:45 The two breaks are deliberate. A room that never leaves its table never goes to the bar. Both are announced from the front, and both run to time. Indicative times. The finishing time is set by you and the last round is written to land on it.

Two natural breaks

The format is built with two proper intervals rather than one long night, because a room that never leaves its table never goes to the bar. Both breaks are announced from the front.

Finishing on time

The night ends when the scoreboard says it does, not when the questions run out. The last round is written to land at the finishing time you give us.

What the room needs to do

Nothing unusual. If you already run function nights, you almost certainly have all of it.

What Ramsgate RSL gets

On the night

A function room full of local adults on a weeknight, who arrive early, stay about three hours, and are in no rush to leave. They eat before it starts and drink through two announced breaks. That trade is yours entirely — we take nothing from the bar or the kitchen.

Before and after

Named as the venue partner on both soccertrivia.com.au and soccerchannel.com.au, in the invitation that goes to 123 clubs, and in the coverage of the night itself.

Video you can use

Soccer Trivia is a Soccer Channel production, so the night is filmed properly rather than on a phone. Ramsgate RSL appears in that footage, and you are welcome to use it on your own channels afterwards. For most venues that is the part that outlasts the evening.

What we would publish about you

Plain and factual, and shown to you for approval before it goes anywhere:

“The first Soccer Trivia night is held at Ramsgate RSL, who are providing the room. Entry is free for every club.”

A relationship, if it works

We are asking for one night, not a series. If it fills the room and your members enjoy it, we would rather come back to you than start again somewhere else — but that is a conversation for afterwards, on evidence, and nothing in this proposal asks you to commit to it now.

What it costs you

The room and the AV for one evening. There is no fee from us and no invoice to you, in either direction. If your policy is to charge for the room, tell us and we will talk about it — but we are proposing this as a partnership rather than a hire, because the trade in the room is the point.

What we cannot promise you

This is the first event. Nobody has played one yet. Anyone who tells you they can guarantee a number for a first event is guessing, so here is the arithmetic instead.

If this many of the 123 clubs enterTablesPeople at tables
10 per cent12about 72
15 per cent18about 108
20 per cent25about 150

Six people to a table. Clubs entering more than one table, and supporters who come along without playing, are not counted above.

How we take the risk off you

We are inviting clubs first and booking a room second. You will have a confirmed number of tables in writing before you are asked to hold a date. If the number is too small to be worth your room, we would rather you said so then than have us fill your function diary with an empty night.

One thing you should hear from us first

Ramsgate RSL FC is one of the 22 clubs we are inviting from Football St George. The football club and the RSL are separate organisations, but they share a name, and a rival committee will not make that distinction on a phone call.

Our position, which we will say publicly and in writing: the venue is a venue. Every question was written and checked before any venue was chosen, no club sees a question before the night, and no club gets a seat, a round or an advantage because of where the event is held. We would rather raise that with you now than have it raised by somebody else later.

The geography

Ramsgate is in the St George district. Clubs from Sutherland Shire, Bankstown and the Eastern Suburbs would be travelling. We will say that plainly in the invitation rather than imply the first event is equally convenient for all five associations.

And if it does not work

If not enough clubs come in, we do not run it, and we tell you before you have committed anything. There is no version of this where you are left holding a booked room and an empty diary.

Check every word of this

The competition has not been played yet. Everything it runs on has been built, and none of it needs to be taken on trust.

425articles published, free to read, no account and no paywall
2,395questions written and checked against a named, dated source
1,837Australian football clubs mapped in the Soccer Channel database, across 8 states

The questions come from articles anyone can read

That is what makes this different from a pub quiz. Every public question on the site is drawn from an article on the same site, so a club can actually prepare — a committee sends the link to its players, its juniors’ parents and its life members, and the ones who read do better on the night.

The questions used at the events themselves are never published. A trivia night stops being a competition the moment the answers can be found on a phone under the table.

Who we are

Soccer Trivia is produced by the team behind Soccer Channel, an Australian football media outlet, and operated by Nickon Enterprises Pty Ltd, a New South Wales company. It is not a licensed franchise of an overseas quiz brand. The library, the questions and the events are ours.

What happens next

1 2 3 4 Today Next few weeks Then The night Room possible in principle? Clubs register. We count them. We bring you a number. You hold a date. Announced, filmed, Ramsgate RSL named. You are only asked to commit at step 3, once there is a real number of tables to commit to.

What we would need from you

  • Whether the room is possible in principle
  • Which nights of the week suit you, and which months do not
  • What the room holds, seated at tables of six
  • Whether your AV covers a screen, a microphone and sound
  • Whether you charge for the room, and what that looks like

What you would get from us next

  • A confirmed number of tables, in writing, before you hold anything
  • A one-page run sheet with times, so your floor staff know the night
  • The wording we intend to publish about Ramsgate RSL, for your approval before it goes up
