Nii Lamptey
Born 10 December 1974. Pele called him the new Pele. That is not a paraphrase – Pele personally touted him as his successor.
In 1991 Lamptey captained Ghana's Black Starlets to the Under-17 World Championship, scoring four goals and taking the Golden Ball. The tournament also contained Juan Sebastian Veron, Marcelo Gallardo and Alessandro Del Piero.
He debuted for Anderlecht at 16, after Belgian age-limit rules were changed to accommodate him. His goal against Roma in the UEFA Cup in March 1991 is still the youngest in the history of European club competition.
He then played for roughly fourteen clubs between 1990 and 2008 and never approached the career the comparison implied.
Here is the part that gets left out. Lamptey has said that Pele's praise, though he appreciated it, made his life harder, because it created expectations he could not always meet. And the documented causes of his decline were not attitude or application. They were an agent who exploited him, illiteracy that left him unable to check what he was signing, transfers driven by other people's financial incentives rather than by football, racism abroad, and the deaths of two of his children.
That is a very different diagnosis from "he burned out".
Freddy Adu
Born 2 June 1989.
He signed for DC United on 18 November 2003 aged 14 – the youngest athlete ever to sign a professional contract in the United States.
He debuted on 3 April 2004, aged 14 years and 10 months, the youngest player in MLS history – a record that stood until Cavan Sullivan. He scored on 17 April 2004, the youngest goalscorer in MLS history. He played for the United States on 22 January 2006, aged 16 years and 234 days, the youngest man ever to appear for the national team.
Benfica bought him in July 2007 for USD 2 million.
He then played for around 15 clubs in nine countries – the United States, Portugal, Monaco, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Serbia, Finland and Sweden. His last competitive appearance was in 2018, for Las Vegas Lights. In February 2021 the Swedish club Osterlen FF terminated his contract after one month, saying he was not physically or mentally fit enough to be competitive.
He was 31. He had been famous for seventeen years and a professional for eighteen.
Bojan Krkic
Born 28 August 1990.
On 16 September 2007, aged 17 years and 19 days, he became Barcelona's youngest player in an official La Liga match, breaking Lionel Messi's record. On 20 October 2007, aged 17 years and 53 days, he became their youngest league goalscorer. He played for Spain on 10 September 2008 at 18 years and 13 days.
Then he withdrew from Spain's Euro 2008 squad, citing fatigue.
A decade later, in a 2018 Guardian interview, he said the real reason was anxiety attacks. He said officials at the Spanish federation and his teammates knew, and that the sport showed no interest in discussing mental health.
He played for Roma, Milan, Ajax, Stoke City and others, spent his last years in North America and Japan, and retired in March 2023, aged 32.
Both his Barcelona records have gone. Ansu Fati took the club scoring record at 16 years and 304 days in August 2019, and Lamine Yamal made his own Barcelona debut in April 2023 at 15.
And the third kind of failure
Youssoufa Moukoko is a different case again, and it is the reason "youngest ever" records should be handled carefully.
He broke the Bundesliga appearance record at 16 years and 1 day on 21 November 2020, and the scoring record at 16 years and 28 days on 18 December 2020. He was, briefly, the most famous 16-year-old in Europe.
In December 2024 a man claiming to be his father publicly alleged that his registered birth date was false and that he had been born on 19 July 2000 – which would make him four years older. The claim has not been confirmed by anybody involved. It may be untrue. But it is now attached to every record he holds.
The Australian version
Australia's cautionary example is recent and still unfolding. Garang Kuol scored on his A-League Men debut on 5 April 2022, played in a World Cup knockout tie at 18, and signed for Newcastle United for GBP 300,000. What followed was a loan to FC Volendam, who were relegated from the Eredivisie, a friendly appearance for Newcastle against Tottenham in May 2024, and a move to Sparta Prague on 29 August 2025.
None of that is failure. He is 21. But it is a reminder that the famous debut and the career are two different things, and the gap between them is where most prodigies live.
